Dos Dedos is a cozy-cool, cantina-style Mexican restaurant on the north end of Bath’s city centre. Visiting Bath last month, I had no idea this little Mexican mecca was within my reach. It was only when I was on my way to a completely different restaurant on the same street, limestone blending into more limestone, that I noticed a sign that wasn’t in English.
‘Dos Dedos’ – Spanish for ‘two fingers’ – it said above a door with a closed sign. On the window, there was a logo, a hand with two fingers up, and a snake wrapping around them. I laughed, Googled the joint and earmarked it for a future visit.
I returned on a Friday afternoon and Bath’s residents were out to play. This time, Dos Dedos’s door was wide open, letting music escape onto the street with a tall man, burly and bearded, IDing the queue outside the door. No children allowed after 6pm – I like this place already. I walked in (they don’t accept reservations), was immediately welcomed and seated, and ordered a margarita. Divine.
After ordering, I checked out my surroundings. Dos Dedos is a tight space with limited seating, warmly lit with hanging lights and a glowing Virgin Mary placed high on top of a stocked wooden liquor cabinet. Cantina vibes, indeed. Small round tables line in front of the booths behind the window, offering intimate seating, while a few high tops are squeezed in near the bar. Behind the counter, tequila and mezcal bottles crowd the wooden shelves with citrus fruits, a couple of sugar skulls and another image of ‘La Virgen’, shiny, vibrant and loud.
The menu at Dos Dedos is limited, focusing mostly on tacos made with gluten-free corn. The first plate to hit the table was a pair of chilli guajillo braised beef tacos (£9.75) – charred and succulent– with shredded king cabbage, chopped onion, salsa verde (a tomatillo and green chilli-based sauce) and coriander. One bite in and the juicy beef and lime was already dripping down my very pleased face. (This is their only meat option it seems; interestingly, the balance is in favour of vegetarian and vegan options such as the portobello mushroom quesadilla and teriyaki tofu tacos.)
Switching to seafood, again it’s about less-is-more here with just one option but the two double crab tostadas I tried were gorgeous, and great value at £11.50: white and brown crab meat is smothered onto giant, crispy tortillas and topped with pureed avocado, pico de gallo and coriander. Squeeze some lime on top and you’ve made heaven on a plate.
My visit was short and sweet, but what drove me to write this review was the spicy margarita, made with lime, house tajin, El Tequileño blanco tequila – a Mexican favourite, and Dos Dedos’s ‘spicy Mexican syrup.’ I was sceptical. Some restaurants think a spicy marg means adding heaps of Tabasco sauce to a classic marg and calling it a day, but Dos Dedos is not one of them. This margarita was better than the classic, and actually spicy.
I asked the server for the spicy syrup secret, and he spoke sweet sounds into my ear. Coriander, chillis, garlic, agave syrup and other herbs and spices are blitzed and blended into a truly fantastic liquid. I looked at the Virgin Mary behind the bar, thanked her and ordered another round.
