Aged Pecorino

Back to South Devon and to The Millbrook Inn, the Back to South Devon and to The Millbrook Inn, the platonic ideal of a village pub in the extremely picturesque South Pool. The timeless village almost doesn’t seem real (especially in this glorious weather): the occasional thatched cottage, a red telephone box (now a defibrillator), a little bridge like the one Postman Pat drives over (and the babbling brook goes behind the pub); just the drive there through those stupendously narrow roads is challenging but fun, though for the ultimate experience you can arrive by boat from Salcombe, if you time the tides just right. As for the pub, haven’t been here in quite some time but now Elly Wentworth (ex-The Angel of Dartmouth) is executive chef and she’s doing a wonderful job here as well as overseeing Fowlescombe Farm. Catch of the day on this visit was this excellent hake with samphire and parsley sauce - just heaven on the benches outside. Highly recommended if you’re in the South Hams

Also in our new long-form reviews for July, the wo Also in our new long-form reviews for July, the wonderful Palais Royal Restaurant where déjeuner really means déjeuner. Chef Philip Chronopoulos has been here for 10 years now, bringing Greek influences and ingredients to the table though this isn’t exactly “fusion” - it’s still very much in the French fine dining façon and where better value can be found at lunchtime (also it’s very conveniently located, near Willi’s Wine Bar and Galerie Vivienne). Pictured here: the bouche-amusing mezze at the beginning; broccoli with lemon, lemon balm and Greek yogurt; suckling pig with rhubarb and mustard; the view; strawberry and elderflower millefeuille with Peloponnese honey; digestifs.

And now to Sprout, the ground floor cocktail bar a And now to Sprout, the ground floor cocktail bar at the recently-opened (and impossibly gorgeous) Templeton Garden hotel in Earl’s Court. It may seem like another bar with a monosyllabic name and virtuous intentions but Sprout is one of the more noteworthy openings this year - some drinks will raise an eyebrow or two (an Anchovy Gimlet anyone?) but most are delicious. Pictured here are the Rhubarb Ramos, Tomato Collins and Courgette Martini. Also, they make an excellent classic martini, best enjoyed on the terrace overlooking the ‘secret’ gardens at the back.

Also in our new long-form reviews this month, Flor Also in our new long-form reviews this month, Flora at the dreamy Trelowarren Estate in Cornwall - a five hour drive from London but well-worth it (the train only goes as far as Redruth as Dr Beeching closed the line to Helston in 1962). This is a tale of a road trip - not going on holiday by mistake but tracking down a chef you admired at P. Franco a decade ago and regretting having lobster for breakfast as the lunch was so good. Said lunch included (in no particular order) featherblade and melt-in-your-mouth short rib, grilled asparagus with sauce gribiche, railway arch chunks of sourdough, and a rhubarb and berry pavlova. July is here and we have new reviews from Cornwall July is here and we have new reviews from Cornwall, Paris and London on our main website. First, Mamapen, a residency at Soho pub The Sun and 13 Cantons, and London’s only Cambodian restaurant. Pictured here are the Khmer BBQ chicken with a Shaoxing teriyaki glaze (“what every other flame-grilled chicken dish wants to be when it grows up”), their legendary Tattie Mince Noodles, and their pickles and prawn crackers. Chez Bruce, World Martini Day, the Lamb’s Condui Chez Bruce, World Martini Day, the Lamb’s Conduit Street Summer Solstice party (featuring the Bloomsbury Waiter’s Race) and Ciao Bella all in the same day? Yes, it’s possible. Of course, martinis were the order of the day at Chez Bruce (and glad to see the return of the cheese board!), plus martinis after the Waiter’s Race at La Fromagerie, and rounding it all off with dinner outdoors at Ciao Bella. A wonderful celebration for the start of the summer.

Also pictured here are the trio of salmon hors d’œuvres and the pork fillet with choucroute, caramelised apples and mustard at Chez Bruce which were also lovely

Bébé Bob good times (with air conditioning!): ch Bébé Bob good times (with air conditioning!): chicken bone Negronis, martinis (to get in the mood for World Martini Day this Saturday), roast chicken, chicken schnitzel (yes, almost entirely a single protein menu, reminiscent of the Gourmet Night episode of Fawlty Towers where “if you don’t like duck you’re rather stuck”, but there were also Slavic salmon crêpes, a crème caramel and a tarte tatin involved in proceedings).

And when in Soho, stopping by The Thin White Duke is always necessary for Dav’s special off-menu Negroni (if you know you deliciously know). And a Termini traveller for the road. What could possibly go wrong?

A delicious return to Trivet in Bermondsey, five y A delicious return to Trivet in Bermondsey, five years after first reviewing it on our main site (where does the time go?). It may even be better. This was a superb meal. Pictured here are the crispy veal sweetbreads with wild herbs and confit kombu salad (insanely good), “drunk lobster” and Trivet noodles, grilled venison (which was so tender it barely needed a knife) with red cabbage, dandelion and lardo di colonnata, mandatory martinis in the bar, Jonny Lake on the pass (always great to see a chef patron actually there). An eye-opening and thrilling wine selection too, overseen by Isa Bal and Sofia Crepaz (tried a 2014 from Azerbaijan which was delicious after decanting - the sommeliers here are very knowledgeable and great at advising without upselling or being pushy).

Prices have inevitably gone up since 2020 but it still seems fair for this level of cookery and service. Won’t leave it so long until next time.
