Can’t stay mad at Argentina for long. The Bull Ste Can’t stay mad at Argentina for long. The Bull Steak Expert in Holborn remains one of the most underrated independent Argentinian steak restaurants in London. Lovely place with the friendly, personal service you’d expect of a small business. Been coming here for 15 or so years and the standards have never slipped. Walking distance from Noble Rot and the other wonders of Lamb’s Conduit Street too. Oh and delicious air con.

Fish and chips at The Turf Tavern, tucked away in Fish and chips at The Turf Tavern, tucked away in the centre of Oxford. Always nice knowing a pub once had David Bowie as a guest as well as other stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (not so much the politicians though)

Delicious times at Margaret’s in Cambridge, the mo Delicious times at Margaret’s in Cambridge, the more casual follow-up to the wonderful Restaurant Twenty-Two (which is just two doors down; Margaret’s hasn’t strayed too far from parental gaze). This part of the Chesterton Road may be a (mathematical) bridge too far for tourists who just want to go punting but it’s clear this restaurant is very popular with locals, and deservedly so. A year since it opened it seems to have settled in very well and the £75 set menu, while feeling initially punchy, is fair when you consider how much they feed you. In particular, there’s a clear devotion to independent and local suppliers.

Pictured from this visit (which can only ever be a snapshot due to the changing set menu), Audley End lamb rump (just a little dry), the generous selection of starters before that and a retro steamed ginger sponge with custard. If you’re heading to Spain this summer, you may wa If you’re heading to Spain this summer, you may want to give the tapas scene in Málaga some consideration - not just the birthplace of Picasso but one of Spain’s most underrated food cities. Vicky Morrison recently visited and has compiled her recommendations, now published in the Travel section on our main website (or link in bio).

Pictured here are the empanadas and vermouth at the old school La Tranca complete with their Spanish record collection (photos 1 & 2), mojama (or cured tuna with Andalusian almonds) and conchas finas at Bar El Central (photos 3 & 4), acorn-fed jamón at Hasta los Andares (photo 5) and the confit artichokes with jamón at Mesón Mariano (photo 6)

Also in Paris, Yam’Tcha Bistrot: this is Adeline G Also in Paris, Yam’Tcha Bistrot: this is Adeline Grattard’s more causal bistro near Les Halles (which recently opened following the closure of the Michelin-starred Yam’Tcha in 2025). The menu has the same sense of play, hopping between Hong Kong and France, and pretty much everywhere in between, but unfortunately for our local writer Rachel Naismith this was a frustrating experience - “a meal marred by slapdash mistakes between moments of gorgeous layering and strict attention to detail.” However, there is still hope and maybe the heatwave contributed to the errors... Beef during a long lunch at Le Bon Saint-Pourçain Beef during a long lunch at Le Bon Saint-Pourçain in Paris, the full review of which is now online along with our other new content for July (a bit of a travel theme this month, including Yam’Tcha Bistrot (also in Paris), a guide to the best tapas places in Málaga and a review of Margaret’s in Cambridge - link in bio or head to palatemag.co.uk in your browser).

As for Le Bon Saint-Pourçain - a Left Bank restaurant that can be easily found by its conspicuous dark blue façade (lighter than Andy Burnham’s t-shirts) - this could be the Platonic ideal of a French neighbourhood bistro. It’s certainly the friendliest. Everyone gets a good table, no-one is rushed, lunch means Lunch. A very rare 18.5/20.
