Back to Noizé in Fitzrovia for another excellent meal. Gougères and those extremely moreish sole fritters (a mandatory order with martinis every time), cured mackerel on Marmande tomato with gooseberry chutney and buttermilk dressing, then (with the Gevrey-Chambertin nicely decanted) lamb rump with pea cake, courgette tzatziki and a lamb jus, and saddle of rabbit with grilled cuttlefish, aubergine risotto and salsa verde, followed by cheese, naturally. And just before, for cocktail hour on the Bloomsbury side of Tottenham Court Road, drinks in the garden at the new Zetter Hotel, a lovely oasis of calm behind the British Museum. Perfect summer evening in central London

Can’t stay mad at Argentina for long. The Bull Steak Expert in Holborn remains one of the most underrated independent Argentinian steak restaurants in London. Lovely place with the friendly, personal service you’d expect of a small business. Been coming here for 15 or so years and the standards have never slipped. Walking distance from Noble Rot and the other wonders of Lamb’s Conduit Street too. Oh and delicious air con.

Fish and chips at The Turf Tavern, tucked away in the centre of Oxford. Always nice knowing a pub once had David Bowie as a guest as well as other stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (not so much the politicians though)

Delicious times at Margaret’s in Cambridge, the more casual follow-up to the wonderful Restaurant Twenty-Two (which is just two doors down; Margaret’s hasn’t strayed too far from parental gaze). This part of the Chesterton Road may be a (mathematical) bridge too far for tourists who just want to go punting but it’s clear this restaurant is very popular with locals, and deservedly so. A year since it opened it seems to have settled in very well and the £75 set menu, while feeling initially punchy, is fair when you consider how much they feed you. In particular, there’s a clear devotion to independent and local suppliers.

Also in Paris, Yam’Tcha Bistrot: this is Adeline Grattard’s more causal bistro near Les Halles (which recently opened following the closure of the Michelin-starred Yam’Tcha in 2025). The menu has the same sense of play, hopping between Hong Kong and France, and pretty much everywhere in between, but unfortunately for our local writer Rachel Naismith this was a frustrating experience - “a meal marred by slapdash mistakes between moments of gorgeous layering and strict attention to detail.” However, there is still hope and maybe the heatwave contributed to the errors...
