Chez Bruce, World Martini Day, the Lamb’s Condui Chez Bruce, World Martini Day, the Lamb’s Conduit Street Summer Solstice party (featuring the Bloomsbury Waiter’s Race) and Ciao Bella all in the same day? Yes, it’s possible. Of course, martinis were the order of the day at Chez Bruce (and glad to see the return of the cheese board!), plus martinis after the Waiter’s Race at La Fromagerie, and rounding it all off with dinner outdoors at Ciao Bella. A wonderful celebration for the start of the summer.

Also pictured here are the trio of salmon hors d’œuvres and the pork fillet with choucroute, caramelised apples and mustard at Chez Bruce which were also lovely

Bébé Bob good times (with air conditioning!): ch Bébé Bob good times (with air conditioning!): chicken bone Negronis, martinis (to get in the mood for World Martini Day this Saturday), roast chicken, chicken schnitzel (yes, almost entirely a single protein menu, reminiscent of the Gourmet Night episode of Fawlty Towers where “if you don’t like duck you’re rather stuck”, but there were also Slavic salmon crêpes, a crème caramel and a tarte tatin involved in proceedings). 

And when in Soho, stopping by The Thin White Duke is always necessary for Dav’s special off-menu Negroni (if you know you deliciously know). And a Termini traveller for the road. What could possibly go wrong?

A delicious return to Trivet in Bermondsey, five y A delicious return to Trivet in Bermondsey, five years after first reviewing it on our main site (where does the time go?). It may even be better. This was a superb meal. Pictured here are the crispy veal sweetbreads with wild herbs and confit kombu salad (insanely good), “drunk lobster” and Trivet noodles, grilled venison (which was so tender it barely needed a knife) with red cabbage, dandelion and lardo di colonnata, mandatory martinis in the bar, Jonny Lake on the pass (always great to see a chef patron actually there). An eye-opening and thrilling wine selection too, overseen by Isa Bal and Sofia Crepaz (tried a 2014 from Azerbaijan which was delicious after decanting - the sommeliers here are very knowledgeable and great at advising without upselling or being pushy). 

Prices have inevitably gone up since 2020 but it still seems fair for this level of cookery and service. Won’t leave it so long until next time.

Back in London and a return visit to the Garden Mu Back in London and a return visit to the Garden Museum Café in Lambeth, preceded by a meander through “Cecil Beaton’s Garden Party”. As for the food, delightful as always: Negronis, gorgeous focaccia dripping in olive oil, good value wine, scallops with sobrasada butter, poussin with braised peas and smoked bacon, custard tart with strawberries and crème fraîche, all executed well.

As for the exhibition, Beaton was perhaps most famous for his photography but this also showcases his other artistic pursuits such as set and costume design, and love of all things floral of course (the best exhibit here being probably the original letter from Audrey Hepburn next to his Oscar). The rest of the museum is also very interesting (and if horticulture isn’t your thing just spend more time in the café).

Quite a fun and different thing to do in London, and delicious too (just don’t eat the installations).

Come for a loto ticket, stay for the blanquette de Come for a loto ticket, stay for the blanquette de veau. Finally checked out Le Cornichon (in the 11th arrondissement of Paris). On the surface it appears to be a bog standard corner tabac bar but within it’s a different story. The weekday set lunch menu (“formule”) is particularly good value where three courses is 22 Euros (in this case a salad, cod with a grenobloise sauce, and a little fraisier for dessert). But even the à la carte menu is superb value (they do a Tournedos Rossini for 35 Euros). Understandably it was packed but you can book at lunchtime (evenings are walk-in only)

Back to the ever-reliable and never-changing Chez Georges (pictured here the filet de boeuf and tarte tatin); 

Saddle of veal and various cheeses at wine-led resto Vantre; 

Aux Crus de Bourgogne for oeufs en meurette and beautifully beige chicken in vin jaune sauce; 

Two David exhibitions (Bowie and Hockney) showing the French admiration for British artists is alive and strong;

Le Bougainville with its soothing backdrop of jazz music; 

A great value spot of lunch at Le Cornichon (more to follow on that separately); 

Le Mary Celeste for a gimlet and their devilled eggs; 

The Cambridge for their Termini-style “Pocket Piano”; 

An overdue return to Semilla (first reviewed by this publication in 2019 and still just as good); 

New cocktail bar Stolen Moon; 

And of course no visit is complete without stopping by Willi’s Wine Bar and Harry’s Bar where Laurent makes the best Aviation…
