Foie gras two ways

Charlie’s at Brown’s on a Sunday evening is al Charlie’s at Brown’s on a Sunday evening is always the perfect antidote to the Sunday Scaries. An insanely luxurious omelette Arnold Bennett with lobster and lobster bisque, roast beef carved tableside (in the evening served with ladles of gravy and thick chips), live jazz, comforting booths, and The Donovan Bar conveniently in the same hotel for cocktails. Always love visiting here. They just get everything right - the cuisine led by Adam Byatt, the service and ambience are all excellent

Great to be back at The Park and very glad to see Great to be back at The Park and very glad to see osso buco added to the menu! And this one was truly delicious, up there with the best in Milan. Lovely vitello tonnato, pea and mint arancini, and a Caesar salad too, accompanied by a supple Montalcino

Cocktail hour at The Park. And the martinis here a Cocktail hour at The Park. And the martinis here are excellent, all made to the customer’s specifications (this one with No 3 gin, a whisper of vermouth, very cold and a twist). Also, can we just have a moment to appreciate the interior design of Jeremy King’s restaurants?

An impressive first meal at the new branch of Clau An impressive first meal at the new branch of Claude and Lucy Bosi’s Joséphine in Marylebone (preceded by a Negroni and Martini at St John Marylebone, as one must). It differs to the Chelsea/Fulham “original” in perhaps two main respects: the cuisine is more “Parisienne” than “Lyonnaise” with more fish and seafood on the menu, and the space is somewhat cosier with its antechambers, enclosed bar area and square-shaped dining room (can see this being lovely in the winter; it was too nippy in this mysterious interim winter we’re having for anyone to enjoy the outside tables). Service needs just a wee bit of polishing in places (understandable as it’s early days) but great to see Claude himself there and the food was delicious… Honestly, take a look at that Bordelaise sauce with the filet de boeuf, reflecting the ceiling above - sensational. The steak itself was cooked perfectly medium rare, the chips divine, the Camembert soufflé superb. Less sure about the so-called Devilled Eggs which are perhaps a bit of a mistranslation (oeufs mimosa are of course milder given the French predilection for herbs over spices, but these were still OK). Overall, fabulous. And decent value for Marylebone too. Will return.

Back to York and finally to Roots, seven years lat Back to York and finally to Roots, seven years late to the party (and also just missing Gary Oldman who has gone back to his theatrical roots at the York Theatre Royal). But an excellent meal nonetheless, definitely worth the trip from King’s Cross (and York’s residents are lucky to have Roots). Apart from some very minor issues on this visit, the cooking here is clearly exceptional. Behold the lamb with stuffed morel and sheep’s yogurt (and that jus), the divine scallop with perfect caramelisation, and the fun Yorkshire rhubarb with hay and rosemary - just a few things from the “Core” tasting menu. Happy Cinco de Mayo to all who celebrate! Here are Happy Cinco de Mayo to all who celebrate! Here are the delicious tacos and the spicy margarita made to a secret recipe at Dos Dedos, a lovely little cantina in Bath. Full review up on palatemag.co.uk or tap the link in our bio.

The menu is short but sweet here, the tacos and tostadas great value around the £10-12 mark, also with vegetarian and vegan options.

Waltz, the new bar by Gento Torigata (formerly of Waltz, the new bar by Gento Torigata (formerly of Kwãnt), has got off to an extremely promising start. The perfect marriage of nature and jazz, the bar has been meticulously designed by Gento; it is also a temple of clear ice with a fantastic playlist to boot. Pictured here are the Gibson with Japanese pickles, the ‘Brooklyn, Tokyo’ (a beautiful drink for contemplative sipping), and from the part of the menu which follows Japan’s micro-seasons, the intriguing ‘Rhubarb’ (which believe it or not includes cheddar distillate). You know a bar has got it right when they offer marmite pinwheels for snacks too…

Waltz is currently on a walk-in basis only but on this visit the wait was only about 10-15 minutes - well worth it for one of the coveted 12 seats, and whilst waiting there are still drinks available, albeit from a shorter menu (unlike the interminable purgatory that is the Dukes or Connaught queue). Patience will be rewarded. Waltz is hands down one of the best new openings of the year. More details in the review! 🍸
